About the Reproductive Health Project

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) is the medical professional society for maternal-fetal medicine subspecialists, who are obstetricians with additional training in high-risk pregnancies. Since 2019, the SMFM Reproductive Health Project has worked to protect and expand access to abortion and other evidence-based reproductive health care by activating and educating SMFM members and collaborating with our partners in the reproductive health, rights, and justice communities.

SMFM is dedicated to ensuring that all medically appropriate treatment options, including abortion, are available for individuals experiencing a high-risk pregnancy and improves access to abortion and contraceptive care in the United States by:

  • Developing and distributing evidence-based clinical guidance and educational materials

  • Offering clinical and advocacy skills training

  • Creating advocacy resources and tools

  • Engaging in collaborative action within the maternal health community

  • Building leadership skills, partnerships, and commitment among clinicians, medical and other professional societies, and health care institutions in support of abortion care

  • Serving as an evidence-based information source for the public and media

  • Committing to the elimination of abortion stigma and achieving health equity in reproductive health care.
